Wondering How to Stay Fit During the Monsoon? We’ve Got Six Tips for You

    Last Updated On 04-07-2018

Sometimes, in the blink of an eye, the scorching heat of the summer can transform into cloudy skies, pouring rain and hot cups of tea. Yes, it’s that time of the year – the monsoon season.

It is a season that brings relief from the heat but can also interfere with your day-to-day activities. The heavy rains, flooding and puddles can bring your daily workout to a screeching halt. After all, it’s hard to go running outside when it’s raining.

Furthermore, potholes and stagnant water on the roads make it difficult, and sometimes dangerous, to go on your morning run. You could catch an infection or a cold.

How do you keep your fitness level intact during the long months of the monsoon and stay healthy? Your health insurance policy covers water-borne infections like dengue, malaria and injuries and accidents on the road. However, you can do your part to keep your fitness levels intact and protect your health.

So, before you completely let go of your exercise and diet, check out these tips that will keep you fit and healthy.

    1. Say No to Street Food: Quick, delicious and varied – that’s the charm of street food. Unfortunately, street food during the monsoons can cause infections due to contaminated water or polluted raw vegetables used. Stick to home food or a restaurant that you trust.
    2. A Repellent a Day: It may not be as catchy, but an insect repellent a day, keeps the infections away. Once the rain has petered out, it leaves large pools of stagnant water on the road. This is the perfect breeding ground for mosquitos, which in turn leads to infections like malaria and dengue. While your health insurance covers infections, a strong repellent can prevent them from happening.
    3. On Dry Land: It’s difficult to stay dry in the rains, but there are small things you can do to counteract any harm that comes from walking in the rain. Firstly, add a disinfectant to your bath water to clean your skin of any bacteria or pollution from rain water. Secondly, dry your feet immediately. Thirdly, dry your hair and change into loose, cotton clothes.
    4. Exercise starts at Home: A trip to the gym, or a jog outside is difficult in the rain. Luckily, there are ways around this. Yoga, lunges, weights and spot running are great ways to keep your metabolism up without leaving the house. Try simple tricks like taking the stairs instead of the lift (make sure the stairs are dry and safe!)
    5. A Cup of Warmth and Wellness: Steaming cups of chai, warm bowls of soup, hot milk with haldi and spices will ward off or treat illnesses like the common cold. They’re also incredibly comforting and help you deal with sudden temperature changes. Even when it’s not warm, stay hydrated by drinking water. It’s small changes like these, that can make a huge difference to your health.
    6. Vitamins for the Win: Getting soaked in the rain, using the AC and catching the virus from family or friends – the opportunities for catching a cold are endless. To prevent this, boost your Vitamin C intake. You can do this by adding citrus fruits, strawberries, broccoli, green and red peppers and more to your diet. Or you can go for a supplement.

These are just some of the ways you can protect yourself when the monsoon sweeps in. However, it’s important to anticipate an eventuality. You can do this by studying different health insurance plans and choosing one that suits you the best. Combine these tips with the right health insurance and watch your monsoon woes get washed away.
