How to have health check on your kid-children during Monsoon

    Last Updated On 29-08-2019

Monsoon for kids means splashing waters
As the dark clouds inch closer and the downpour begins in July, we know it is time for monsoon. The monsoon period is often associated with relief from the scorching heat of the summer. It is the time for dancing in the rain, an occasional food indulgence and the treat of a hot beverage. For kids, it means fun and frolic in the streets as they get drenched in the downpour.

Monsoon is a delightful time of the year, but it is also a breeding ground for infections and ailments. Monsoon increases the dampness in the atmosphere, which stimulates growth and spread of infection-causing germs. You need to take all precautions and preventive measures to protect your kids against these unruly disease-carrying particles. Make sure the kids are eating home-cooked food as much as possible, maintaining high standards of personal hygiene and exercising regularly to boost immunity. A health insurance plan should also feature in your health checklist for your child. Let’s break it down for you as a checklist to ensure the health and safety of your kids:

    • Hydration
Make sure in monsoon, your kids are keeping up with the regular intake of at least 8 glasses of water. Use boiled water for drinking purpose. Make sure they do not substitute their liquid intake with carbonated or caffeinated drinks and beverages as the preservatives and sugars in them act as diuretics. Push them to consume more of herbal teas with has antibacterial properties.
    • Keep the demons at bay
When your kids step out of the house, make sure they are covered in full sleeved-attire and shoes. A mosquito repellant is another essential. They should always go out with rain protection gear. Getting drenched in the rain should normally be avoided; it is an invitation for sneezes and cold. Try to keep your child’s feet always dry. As much as it is tempting, walking in rainwater makes them prone to a host of viral diseases such as leptospirosis and can also cause numerous fungal infections at the feet and nails.
    • Food intake
Wash fruits and vegetables properly before cooking. Minimize the intake of raw foods during this period. It is also important to maintain a healthy diet in the rainy season, which means that your favourite chaat, juices, kulfis and another street food are off the menu.
    • Eye care
Children’s eyes are very sensitive to irritants; eye infections like conjunctivitis, stye, dry eyes and corneal ulcers are common during the monsoons. Don’t let your child rub  the eyes and eye drops should be used every night.
    • Health insurance plan
It is also important to be prepared for medical emergencies in such weathers. Apart from measures to boost your child’s immunity and staying cautious, it helps to be covered with a comprehensive health insurance plan, Reports suggest that instances of jaundice, food poisoning, dysentery, typhoid, flu, cholera, cough and cold and poor digestion, leptospirosis , shoot up during the monsoon season, leading to a higher number of health insurance claims. Being equipped with health insurance can help you manage the gigantic medical expenses and traverse the road to recovery without any financial shortfalls and worries about access and affordability of your child’s medical care.

Water-borne diseases have been reported to cause more deaths than any other cause , and this threat is much more refined during monsoon. Remember to let your child take a splash this monsoon, but not without donning their rain gear.
