    PNB MetLife kicks off its CSR journey with Karnataka Bank

    PNB MetLife India Insurance Company Limited (PNB MetLife), a leading private player in the Indian life insurance space, today announced the launch of its Corporate Social Responsibility programme supported by Karnataka Bank Ltd (KBL).

    • Ties up with CRY- Child Rights and You and Prajna Counselling Center, leading NGOs in the state
    • Supports the agenda of education and development of 12,000 underprivileged children in the state
      Mangalore, August 5th 2014: PNB MetLife India Insurance Company Limited (PNB MetLife), a leading private player in the Indian life insurance space, today announced the launch of its Corporate Social Responsibility programme supported by Karnataka Bank Ltd (KBL). The programme was launched by Mr. P Jayarama Bhat, MD & CEO, KBL, Mr. Christopher Townsend, President Asia, MetLife Inc, Mr. Mahabaleshwara M S, CGM, KBL and Mr. Tarun Chugh, MD & CEO, PMLI in the presence of Ms. Suma Ravi, Regional Director-South, CRY and Prof. Hilda Rayappan, Director, Prajna Counselling Center, Mangalore. The CSR programme will focus on education and development of underprivileged children in the state of Karnataka. To begin with, two projects have been taken on in Raichur district with CRY and in Dakshina Kannada district with Prajna Counselling Center which will brighten the future of around 12,000 underprivileged children.

      Mr. P Jayarama Bhat, MD & CEO, Karnataka Bank Ltd, said, “We are delighted to support the launch of the CSR programme by our bancassurance partner PNB MetLife. We have been associated with them for last 12 years and today we appreciate and support their endeavor towards education and development of underprivileged children in Karnataka State. We both aim to work together to make a difference in the lives of communities we operate in.”

      Speaking on the initiatives, Mr. Christopher Townsend, President Asia, MetLife Inc said, “MetLife has always had a strong global focus on Corporate Social Responsibility. We have many projects across the globe focused on supporting and empowering local communities via the MetLife Foundation in areas like Financial Inclusion. Continuing our proud history of community development and support, I am excited to be here today to launch PNB MetLife’s CSR programme with our long-standing partner KBL supporting the education and development of underprivileged children.”

      Mr. Mahabaleshwara M S, CGM, Karnataka Bank Limited said, “Karnataka Bank is a socially responsible organization and we have been sponsoring a number of initiatives for the benefit of the local community we operate in. We are delighted that we have this opportunity with PNB MetLife to further strengthen our efforts in the area of education and development of underprivileged children.”

      Talking about the programme, Mr. Tarun Chugh, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, PNB MetLife, said “This is indeed an exciting day for us as we leverage the local expertise of Karnataka Bank to launch our CSR programme. This is the first step and we are evaluating projects across the country on education and development of underprivileged children. This is indeed a testimony to our 12 year old partnership.”

      He added, “We have had a successful relationship with KBL over the last 12 years and we have secured lives of over 134,000 customers and settled close to 700 claims worth Rs 17.2 cr.”

      Professor Hilda Rayappan, Director, Prajna Counselling Centre, expressing her gratitude at the association, said, “I am extremely grateful to KBL and PNB MetLife for lending us a helping hand and generously supporting us in our initiatives. This gesture will help our NGO in improving the quality of crèches in Dakshina Kannada Dist. with additional funds. There are some 750 children of migrant workers, laborers and domestic help who attend these crèches.”

      Talking about CRY’s on-ground experience, Suma Ravi, Regional Director, South, CRY said, “Raichur is one of the most backward areas of Karnataka where, we have witnessed children being the most vulnerable without access to even basic rights like education and nutrition. CRY and our partner work in the region with government systems to strengthen existing and activate defunct schools, make parents and communities aware and mobilize them to ensure children go to school and receive quality education. To ensure children receive quality healthcare, an integral part of our work includes identifying malnourished children and along with our partner ensure immediate intervention, while simultaneously working to improve the network of public healthcare centers.”

      “We are glad to partner with PNB Metlife and KBL as this gives us tremendous support to reach out to more number of children across 67 villages in Raichur and ensure no child is deprived of his or her rights to education, health and, nutrition.”

      CSR Project Details:

      CRY Project: Sneha Jeevi Samsthe situated in one of the most backward districts of Karnataka, Raichur.The focus areas of this project will be intervention in areas like education, child labor and malnutrition to ensure children have access to their rights. The programme aims to reach out and transform lives of 10,301 children across 67 villages and 18 slums in Raichur Dist.

      Plan for 2014-15:

      • Organizing 30 enrollment drives to enroll children into school
      • Enrollment of 232 identified dropped out children into school
      • Activation of 11 primary schools and at least 2 high schools
      • Activation of special hostels for girls who cannot continue their education from home
      • Reducing the rate of malnutrition in the intervention area
      • Health and nutrition camps for children and expectant mothers


      Prajna Counselling Center Project: This project works with Dakshina Kannada District Council for Child Welfare (DKDCCW) in the spirit of Public Private Partnership. The objective is to promote early childhood care and education for children in the age group of 0-6 years in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. This project which is a part of the existing Rajiv Gandhi Crèche Scheme works in tandem with the Government agenda towards strengthening and supporting the 30 crèche centres. The project impacts 751 children of migrant workers, laborers and domestic workers in the districts.

      Plan for 2014-15:

      • Enroll and provide early childhood care and education for over 750 children in 30 creche centres in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Districts.
      • Reach out to over 750 poor and marginalised families and sensitize them on Early Childhood care and Development of younger children in the age group of 0-6 years.
      • Ensuring that the most vulnerable families, working women and their children benefit from the service of the project.
      • Providing nutritious food, medical care and age appropriate toys and other materials for children’s physical and psychological growth in 30 creche centres.
